Considering addiction of childrens towards online gaming and increasing the number of crimes due to such addiction, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (“MeitY) is planning to introduce new rules in the upcoming Digital India Act (“DIA”) which will limit the time children can spend on a gaming app. New regulations might force the online gaming companies to ban in-game purchases by any person below 18 years of age.
The regulations may partly be introduced in DIA and partially be in IT rules but it is going to be introduced. In order to frame regulations the government will consult parents and school associations also to find out what should be included in such regulations.
Recently MeitY has released draft rules on online gaming wherein online gaming companies have to follow KYC procedure during new user registration. The public can submit its comments on draft rules by 17th January, 2023.
